FORMER Oak Park Raiders high school football team quarterback Tye Noble found a unique way to win a job as a rookie special teams player with the University of Calgary Dinos -- taunt the offensive starters.
As a result, Noble will be among the Dinos players competing in the Canada West conference semifinal on Sunday at McMahon Stadium when the Dinos (5-3) host the Regina Rams (5-3).
"I knew I wasn't going to be playing quarterback for the Dinos; I just wanted to play football in any capacity that I could so scout team (practise as the opposition), in my first year, was OK with me," said Noble, in a telephone interview from Calgary.
"So I just went out there and I told all the offensive guys that on scout, all I wanted to do was beat them! They were a little surprised! But they loved that because it made them better," laughed
Noble led Oak Park to the 2007 ANAVETS Bowl championship in the Winnipeg High School Football League. "The coaches told me I was scout team for the year but I tried really hard in practice. Then just before our game against UBC (Week 4), coach Nill (head coach Blake) said 'I want you on special teams this week' and I've been there ever since!"
Noble, who is studying communications, said he loves being a special teams player and serves on the punt return, punt, kick return and kickoff teams.
"Every team needs those guys and I'm proud to be one for this team. These guys are awesome out here and this year has been a blast," Noble said.
